NCIS Season 8 - Things Every NCIS Fan Expects To See

While it is true that the person talking, usually Tony, will feel that Gibbs is behind them after they've said something they don't want him to hear, they never actually hear him sneaking up on them.

Most of the time, their question of, "He's right behind me, isn't he?" is due to paranoia, since Gibbs is great at being right there without them knowing about it. And he always seems to know what they have been talking about when he strides through the NCIS office. Either Gibbs is a psychic or he has great hearing and stealth tactics. Either way, he keeps the NCIS team on their toes and it is hilarious to see the expressions on their faces when caught.

No episode of NCIS goes by without someone getting a head slap, usually from Gibbs. While the rest of the team have taken up the affectionate head slapping, Gibbs is still the main one to dish them out. And of course, Tony is usually the receiver of said head slaps. However, when Gibbs has been too upset to head slap Tony, Tony has either done it to himself or he gets worried.

As he told Abby in the episode Kill Ari, he didn't want Gibbs being nice, he wanted him to be Gibbs. "With you and Ducky, Gibbs is nice. With me, it's a slap on the head." Abby says, "Which makes you feel needed", and Tony readily agrees.

While many would think that head slapping is awful, especially when Gibbs head tapped Tony while he is the hospital fighting the plague in SWAK, it is just a way of getting their attention. And the one in the hospital - Gibbs wanted Tony to fight for his life. He wanted everything to be as normal as possible. This consisted of Gibbs ordering Tony that "you will not die", smacking him on his head and asking, "did you hear me? You will not die" to which Tony responded, "Got ya, boss".

Gibbs gave him a new cell phone, showing that he had faith that Tony would fight for his life and faith that Tony wouldn't die. The tactic worked. The normalcy of Gibbs and the cell phone gave Tony hope, as evidenced by the way he clutched the cell phone to his heart after Gibbs walked away.

Gibbs doesn't stop with his team when it comes to head slapping. In one NCIS episode, Gibbs has even slapped the back of his own head. Tony has also done the same thing. Tony is the next worse at head slapping, since he likes to copy everything Gibbs does.

NCIS would not be the same without these "love taps". It is a trademark of the show. There have been several fans who have made videos about the infamous head slapping. The best one, in my opinion is this one here.

It was put together by Dinid, who puts in Tony's explanation of why they head slap and Ziva's reaction before actually seeing the many head slaps. If you are a fan of NCIS, check it out. Even if you aren't, this vid is good for a laugh and may draw you in to one of the best television shows on the tube today.
